The New Nature Reserve:

Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve is undergoing a significant transformation led by the National Trust and its partners. In early 2025, the Trust acquired 78 hectares of former farmland in Lunt, Sefton, and initiated a large-scale habitat restoration project. This effort includes planting over 93,000 trees and creating new woodlands, wetlands, and species-rich grasslands. The goal is to connect existing habitats and establish a continuous green corridor that benefits both wildlife and the local community.

Adjacent to this project, the Lancashire Wildlife Trust manages the original Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve, a 77-hectare site known for its rich wetland wildlife and archaeological significance. The reserve is home to rare bird species such as barn owls, lapwings, and bitterns, and contains the remains of a 9,000-year-old Mesolithic settlement.

A new Learning Centre is under construction to enhance educational outreach and community engagement, offering facilities like a classroom, toilets, and volunteer spaces. This development aims to improve visitor experience and support ongoing conservation efforts.
